So, a couple of you asked if I could give you some good juicing recipes *waves at Beth and Kate* Mainly, you were curious about a juice that could put a smile on the face of a 7 year old finicky eater. I don't blame you. It's hard to believe. This is a boy who will turn his nose up at lasagne. Lasagne for Pete's sake! *shakes head in disbelief*
If you have a juicer then you're all set. If not, you'll want to get one of those. I have a Breville JE98XL, a good juicer without being too expensive. It's about $150.00. That's not bad compared to some of the "better juicers" that can run into the thousands. I don't recommend a blender. A friend of mine (Hi Laura!) and I, just tried one of the recipes that I have in her Nutribullet and it worked quite well although it's much more pulpy.
Once you have your juicer you want to go to the supermarket and start looking for vegetables you never knew existed. Confession: I had no idea what a parsnip looked like before I started juicing. Now me and parsnips, we're like this...fingers twisted together...best friends forever.
With the exception of "Hal's Mix" and "Licha's Concoction" all of these recipes are found online, somewhere. I've pulled from here and there and everywhere. And if you guys try one that is fantastic that I don't know about, please share. Always looking to add a variety of colorful veggies!
Mean Green My kids LOVE this recipe. It's the only way I could ever get them to eat kale :)
1 cuke (that's cucumber in Lichanese)
6-8 kale leaves
2 green apples
1/2 lemon
ginger to taste. I love ginger but like annoying relatives, I must have it in small doses.
Roots and Fruits This one is the kids' all time favorite. Okay, it's one of my favorites too!
2 carrots
2 parsnips
1 1/2 cups pineapple
1 orange
ginger to taste
Kitchen Sink Disclaimer: I have not tried this one but I recently found it and it looked delish!
1 granny smith apple
1 cup spinach
1 cup kale
1 carrot
handful frozen cranberries
1/2 medium red bell pepper
cilantro
handful seedless grapes
Licha's Concoction Similar to the kitchen sink, you throw in what ever is left in the fridge.
2 carrots
1 parsnip
1/2 tomato
1/4 lemon
2 handfuls spinach
2 handfuls dandelion leaves
5-6 brussel sprouts
1 orange
1/2 pear
Hal's Mix Made as an experiment, loved as a masterpiece
3 carrots
1 orange
1 tomato
1 apple
4 celery stalks
handful dandelion
Celery, Cuke and Pear
1 cuke
3 celery stalks
1 1/2 pears
3 handfuls kale
Ruby Red Champagne Warning: This one can taste a little "earthy" because of the beet. Still delish!
2 cukes
3 carrots
1 beet
2 celery stalks
1 handful parsley
1/2 lemon
ginger to taste
These are all some very good and delicious options. I'm trying to incorporate more of a variety of fruits and veg without eating too much fruit. Would love ideas on how to incorporate more peppers, bananas, blueberries, cranberries, squash, radishes, tomatoes, eggplant, etc...
I tried a V8 juice the other day from a recipe I found online and it was, meh, not that great. I would love a good one. Maybe I'll just have to experiment and come up with one of my own. Also, I came across one the other day that was red pepper, cabbage, leeks and spinach. Trust me...DO NOT EVER TRY THAT ONE. It will give you nightmares!
Thanks! I'm still trying to talk my husband into a juicer:) He thinks we will use it for a week and it will be put in the back of the cabinets!
ReplyDeleteI see where he's coming from. It's tough to make that kind of investment when you don't know if it's right for you :/. They should sell juicers on a rent to own basis. Haaaa!
ReplyDeleteLaughing about renting the juicer! I've been adding more water to my nutri-blast smoothies and thet are much thinner...but not like you'd get with a juicer. I still love it and am blending green and seeds into mine. Nutriens galore!
ReplyDeleteOh good!! When I think of all the nutrition I've gotten over the past couple of weeks, I'm amazed. My body must be like, "what the heck happened?"
DeleteI know! Even after just 2 days I feel a little livlier. I've been having a smoothie and a half for breakfast and another small one as a snack. Next week I am going to try for mostly veggies at dinner and maybe a small bit of meat. Baby steps.
DeleteTotally need a "trial juicer rent program"! Ha!
ReplyDeleteSo our conversation went like this:
Me: I think we need a juicer and here are the reasons why.......
Him: Why don't we just start drinking V8?
Me: because I don't like V8.
Him: then what makes you think we will actually use a juicer?
Unfortunately, he has a very good point:) So I then explained how we could start eating all these crazy vegetables we've never even heard of and how great they would be for us.
We'll see. I'm very persistent:)
We ladies usually end up getting what we want. I don't know why men put up such a futile fight :)
DeleteIm so glad to know you are juicing too! I started January 9th and I am about to wrap up Day 18. I've too had a wonderful experience and lost 17 lbs. I've made a personal commitment to juice 60 days. I've had so much fun creating juice combinations and post them often on my blog. I'll be back to see how your doing.
DeleteRoxanne
I have a juicer which I have only used a couple of times since I bought it. Maybe nows a good time to get it out again!
ReplyDeleteI love juicing. Thanks for these new recipes to try!
ReplyDeleteHi, again. I hope you and Hal are still enjoying your juicing adventure. I wanted to share one of my favorite, first thing in the morning juices because it has more fruit than the rest of the day.
ReplyDelete1 large red bell peppers
2 ruby red grapefruit
4-6 red stems, from swiss chard
3 tangerines
1 yellow squash
3 radishes
Enjoy!
I hope you like it as much as we do.
